what is it?
A sentence fragment is a group of words that resembles a sentence. It will start with a capital letter and have ending punctuation; however, it is neither an independent clause nor a complete idea.
examples:
1- Sentence Fragments Without a Subject
Some sentence fragments lack a subject.
this is an example:
- was not happy. (as you see, the subject is missing, this is a Sentence Fragments that does not have a subject. you can correct it by adding suitable subject:
- she was not happy
- Ahmed was not happy
- the boy from the school was not happy
2- Sentence Fragments Without a Verb
Some sentence fragments have a subject but no verb.
examples:
- the student his homework ( as you see, there is a subject which is the student, but there is no verb, so this is a Sentence Fragments that can be corrected by adding suitable verb). examples:
- the student did his homework
- the student wrote his homework
- the student has done his homework
- the student is/was writing his homework
3- Sentence Fragments that Are Dependent Clauses
Some sentence fragments are dependent clauses that cannot stand alone. when they come alone in a paragraph without their independent clauses, they are fragments.
examples.
- Because it was raining. ( as you see, this is a sentence fragments because it is dependent; and must be added to another clause to have a complete meaning ot idea)
example:
-we could not go out because it was raining
- Because it was raining, we spent the day in home
another example:
Such as drama, music, and dance. ( sentence fragment)
it can be corrected:
I like the arts, such as drama, music, and dance.
